About

Nina Folkersma is an independent curator and art historian, known for her international and multidisciplinary approach. A graduate with honors from the University of Amsterdam, she was among the first participants of De Appel’s Curatorial Programme (1995–1996). Folkersma began her career as an art critic and editor at Metropolis M, and in 2003 founded Quarantine Series, a project space for contemporary art in Amsterdam.

From 2006 to 2009, she was a curator at S.M.A.K. in Ghent. Since then, she has organized numerous exhibitions, large-scale projects, and symposia, often exploring intersectional feminism, Surrealist legacies, and site-specific commissions. Her work spans performance, film, dance, and theatre.

Recent roles include interim/guest curator at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Museum Kranenburgh (Bergen), and Het Noordbrabants Museum (‘s-Hertogenbosch), where she is currently developing a landmark exhibition for 2027–2028 that will, for the first time, bring together the work of Leonora Carrington & Hieronymus Bosch.

In addition to her curatorial work, Folkersma regularly contributes to a range of art magazines and catalogues, including Metropolis M, HART Magazine, Extra Extra, and The Burlington Magazine. She has also held various advisory and board positions, including with the North-South Metro-line art committee in Amsterdam, the Dutch Council for Culture, and as Chair of Art Table Nederland.
